Hard tohold on for 13 October? The second beta of Ubuntu 11.10 is available for download for those who are impatient. Ubuntu 10.11 will be released in October 13 but it is already possible to download the second beta. Ubuntu 10.11 will offer new features: Canonical’s proprietary windowing environment Unity as well as better integration with music services, and video services. The requirement for hardware accelerated 3D is also gone which again opens for Ubuntu on less powerful computers.
Those who do not like Unity can instead choose Gnome 3.2 which incidentally will go live this week.
The server version of Ubuntu 11:10 comes with a new framework for management of virtual machines linked to the cloud. The software is called Orchestra. 11:10 Ubuntu comes with version 3.0.4 of the Linux kernel. Ubuntu is released every six months, but a proposal is under discussion on increasing the frequency significantly.
